Furniture continues sales climb in DOC’s July report
WASHINGTON — Furniture and home furnishings stores continued to show growth in July in the U.S. Department of Commerce’s advance monthly estimates.
For the month, the category totaled $11.66 billion in adjusted estimated sales, up 5.1% year-over-year compared with July 2024’s $11.09 billion and ahead of June’s preliminary estimate of $11.49 billion by 1.4%. Year-to-date, the DOC placed the category’s unadjusted estimated sales at $78.23 billion, which is outpacing 2024 by 5.7%. The category has been steadily and consistently showing year-over-year growth since late 2024.
The overall retail snapshot for July $726.28 billion in adjusted estimated sales, a 3.9% year-over-year increase on July 2024’s $698.91 billion and a difference of half a point on June’s preliminary estimated $722.57 billion.
For the month, miscellaneous store retailers showed the biggest year-over-year increase at 10.6% with non-store retailers (which includes e-commerce) at 8%. Health and personal care stores and food and drinking places (5.6%), clothing and clothing accessory stores (5.0%) and motor vehicle and parts dealers (4.7%) also showed increases that outpaced the overall total.
Relevant to the furniture and home furnishings category, building material, garden equipment and supplies dealers showed a 2.6% year-over-year decline, one of only two categories that showed softer numbers.
The DOC’s advance estimates are based on a sub-sample of the U.S. Census Bureau’s full retail and food services sample. A stratified random sampling method is used to select approximately 5,500 retail and food services firms whose sales are then weighted and benchmarked to represent the complete universe of more than 3 million retail and food services firms.
