Strike suspended as dock workers, port reach tentative agreement

NEW YORK — Dock workers from the International Longshoreman’s Assn. are returning to work today, according to news reports, with a tentative deal reached with the shipping lines, terminal operators and port authorities.

The strike included some 45,000 dockworkers at East and Gulf coast ports, according to reports.

CNN reported that the workers get a $4-per-hour raise each year for the six-year contract, an increase of 62% over the life of the contract.

The union agreed to extend the current contract with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) until Jan. 15, 2025, putting union members back on the job while final details are hammered out for the new contract.

Still to be worked out are agreements about the automation of ports and other sticking points. The new contract will need to be ratified by the ILA membership.
