Tabletop trends spotted in Paris and Frankfurt

Reports from trend observers attending the recent Maison & Objet and Ambiente shows reveal what will be big in the category this year.

“Tabletop took the meaning of ‘bringing the outside in’ to heart at this recent Maison & Objet in January,” said Patti Carpenter of Carpenter & Co. Carpenter is the global trend ambassador for the Paris show.

Nature took center stage, according to Carpenter, with designs inspired by flora and fauna.

“From intricate etchings to semblances of sun prints, we see biophilia flourishing on the table,” she said.

Meanwhile, at the Ambiente fair in Frankfurt last week, The Trend Curve’s Michelle Lamb highlighted these four main points about the tabletop introductions she saw there:

Shape: Organic is back and back in a big way. “So much so that it is eclipsing every other shape out there, except of course basic round.”

Reactive glazes are exaggerated, dramatic and pronounced. “Definitely a textural look to watch out for going forward.”

Digital printing is over every surface in dinnerware.

A note about flatware – the newest color is dark blue. “I saw in three different stands and it looks terrific.”
