Hand stitching translates geometric systems into textile relief

 

Ceren Muftuoglu transforms digitally constructed geometric systems into tactile surfaces through meticulous hand stitching. The project explores repetition, rhythm, and subtle disruptions. Working at the intersection of painting, textile and relief, the artist creates highly ordered compositions that shift between visual precision and the irregularities inherent in making by hand. Each work begins digitally, where Muftuoglu constructs geometric patterns and establishes the underlying system of repetition. The composition is then transferred onto cotton canvas, which is painted with acrylic to create a carefully controlled ground. Using cotton yarn, she hand-stitches each individual line directly through the canvas, gradually building the image through a slow and repetitive process. The stitched threads sit slightly above the painted surface, creating a physical relief that changes with light and viewing angle.

Repetition creates a balance between control and variation

 

From a distance, the works can appear almost digitally rendered, with repeated lines forming larger geometric movements, gradients, and optical rhythms. At close range, however, the material construction becomes visible: individual threads, small variations in tension, and the traces of the hand interrupt the apparent precision of the system. This tension between control and variation is central to artist Ceren Muftuoglu’s work. Repetition functions not simply as a visual device but as a method of construction, allowing small shifts and disruptions to emerge within an otherwise ordered structure. By translating digitally designed systems through an intensive manual process, the works bring together the precision of digital drawing with the tactile and time-based qualities of hand stitching.
