Hall of Fame unveils two permanent exhibits ahead of market

HIGH POINT – The American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame is debuting two new exhibits during the April 13-17 High Point Market, with both set to become permanent features of their new building at 311 S. Hamilton St.

The first addition is The Design Lab, located within the Children’s Discovery Center on the first floor. It offers interactive tools and materials for designing and creating forms and patterns. A highlight of The Design Lab is the Roger and Martha Bland Immersive Pattern Maker, which allows visitors to use interactive technology to design patterns projected onto the walls.

The Hall of Fame building, situated in the heart of the market district, serves the home furnishings industry and the public. It hosts educational, social, and networking events and features permanent learning spaces aimed at increasing awareness of the industry’s contributions to the U.S. economy and American lives.

“The Pattern Maker is devised to bring out the designer that is hidden in each one of us,” said Karen McNeill, chairman and CEO of the Hall of Fame board. “This simple-to-use but highly sophisticated tool even offers visitors the chance to print out their work, so that children can go home and say, ‘Look, Mom, I’m a designer!’”

The Design Lab also will include other hands-on activities for children and young people, including an area for creating mood boards just like the professionals do and another activity that enables visitors to design their own chairs.

The second addition is called “Design Your Room.” Situated on floor two, this space allows visitors to experiment with creating a room that reflects their personal design styles.

Equipped with a kiosk connected to a seven-foot-wide screen, Design Your Room offers an interactive experience where visitors can visualize their ideal room. The custom software, developed through a collaboration between Intiaro and Room Planner, two Polish home furnishings software companies, guides users through the process of choosing their unique style. With this software, users can bring their design visions to life, offering an engaging introduction to personalized interior design.

“This interactive tool gives you the power of a professional to create your dream room using a digital 3-D floor planner and a library of hundreds of products,” McNeill said. “You can change room sizes and shapes on the fly, move windows and doors, and experiment with colors and patterns. When the room is ready, you can drop in a range of furnishings to unleash the design hidden in your mind’s eye.”

Both exhibits were designed by Ohio-based The Roto Group, an interdisciplinary design agency specializing in immersive media, experience design and custom fabrication for museums and other public spaces.
