Ikea reveals which home category dominated its online searches

LEIDEN, The Netherlands — Storage solutions were the top online searches among Ikea shoppers this year, pointing to a growing preference for home organization.

According to Ikea Retail, the three leading online searches within its Ingka Group were for its Kallax shelving unit, Billy bookcase and Pax wardrobe system. The Ingka Group encompasses 400 stores in 31 countries, or about 90% of Ikea’s retail operations.

In fiscal 2024, Ikea.com reached 4.1 billion visitors, marking a 28% increase from 3.2 billion in the previous fiscal year. Online sales accounted for 28% of total sales.

“As digital ecosystems continue to evolve, we can expect these trends to expand further, especially in storage and organization solutions, driven by the popularity of social media hacks and creative ideas for optimizing living spaces,” said Parag Parekh, chief digital officer for Ikea Retail.

Ikea’s Life at Home Report from 2023 also found 40% of people feel most content when their homes are tidy and organized.

The Kallax series, introduced in 2014, can serve multiple functions as a floor or wall-mounted room divider with custom inserts and boxes. The Billy bookcase was designed in 1979 and is one of Ikea’s most iconic products, selling 140 million units worldwide. Also from the 1970s, Pax is a modular closet system featuring mix-and-match components such as adjustable shelves, pull-out trays, customizable doors and solid or mirrored finishes.
