Top hues for 2025

A palette of mostly rich, earthy shades has been selected as the defining shades for 2025, according to some of the leading paint companies. They are moody but also warm, comforting and adaptable, a blend of the blues we have seen in recent years and the reds that are emerging in fashion and giving everything a slight jolt (lest you get too comfortable.)
Here are the shades some of the major paint companies are putting their weight behind this year:
Behr Paint Company
Behr has selected Rumors, what it calls “a deep and dynamic ruby red,” as its Color of the Year.
Red is trending up, according to trend experts, and Behr said its own newest research revealed that a majority of Americans feel energized by the use of the color red in home design. Behr’s selection leans more burgundy or wine-colored than a bright candy apple red.
“We’re seeing people embrace color like never before,” said Erika Woelfel, vice president of color and creative services for the paint company. “Rumors is a modern take on the timeless red that creates an energetic appeal to make a lasting statement in a stunning way.”
Benjamin Moore
Benjamin Moore is going in a similar direction with its color choice for next year. Cinnamon Slate is a mix of heathered plum and velvety brown that brings a soothing familiarity and balance to a room. The key message here is comfort.
Dunn-Edwards
Dunn-Edwards chose Caramelized, a terracotta brown, as its keystone color for next year. It is a warm, saturated color that feels welcoming in our current fast-paced, high-tech age, it said.
Glidden
Glidden is going with purple — Purple Basil, to be exact — for its Color of the Year for 2025. It’s a high-impact, bold hue that has a hint of drama. But it’s also a dusty violet that represents adaptability in a time of change, parent company PPG said.
Sherwin-Williams
For its 15th anniversary of announcing a Color of the Year, Sherwin-Williams is opting this time to forgo a single color in favor of a Color Capsule of the Year. This group of nine shades encapsulate the most essential colors from the paint company’s collection, a mix of “forever favorites, beautiful hues of the moment and future classics.” The shades include Grounded, Sunbleached, Chartreuse, Rain Cloud, Clove, Malabar, Bosc Pear, White Snow and Mauve Finery.
Valspar
A deep, atmospheric blue is Valspar’s choice for next year. It conveys Old World luxury with “the futuristic blending of our physical and digital worlds,” the paint company said. It pairs well with lavender, sage and gray.
Purple Haze
Purple, long the color of royalty, nobility and luxury, blends the power of red and the strength of blue. A few variations of purple — lighter, dustier, mixed with brown undertones — have emerged as key colors for 2025. Here, three paint companies and one furniture maker demonstrate how different shades of purple can be used to maximum effect in home décor.
