World Market grows to 250 stores
ALAMEDA, Calif. – World Market is nearing the size it was before it was acquired by the legacy Bed Bath & Beyond company in 2012.
The specialty retailer opens its 250th unit today in West Jordan, Utah, a major suburb of Salt Lake City. The 18,362-square-foot store is located at Jordan Landing. Last week, World Market also opened a new 19,368-square-foot unit at Prosperity Centre in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
The company’s deliberately paced store openings are bringing it closer to the 259-unit operation it had prior to its acquisition by Bed Bath & Beyond in a deal valued at approximately $495 million. By 2017, World Market had expanded to 276 stores across 35 states and the District of Columbia, the chain’s peak footprint.
When private equity firm Kingswood Capital Management acquired the chain in January 2021 from a financially wobbling BBB, World Market’s store count had fallen back to 243 locations.
Earlier this year, the chain expanded into Annapolis, establishing its third location in Maryland. In April, World Market opened its third store in Massachusetts, adding a new location at Hanover Crossing Shopping Center in Hanover.
