BURLINGTON, N.J. – Burlington Stores Inc. has gone shopping in bankruptcy court again – just as it did after the legacy Bed Bath & Beyond business collapsed in 2023.

The off-price retailer has snapped up leases for 45 former Joann locations, according to reports from Retail Dive and other outlets. Burlington will take possession of the units in May and June.

Fabric and craft retailer Joanne filed for bankruptcy last January and shortly began liquidation of its roughly 800 stores. The bankruptcy was Joann’s second in 10 months.

This won’t be the first Burlington boosted its store opening plans with a defunct retailer’s left-behinds. Two years ago, the company attained the leases for 62 former Bed Bath & Beyond stores.

As of Feb. 1, Burlington operated 1,108 stores in 46 states, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico. The company also announced plans to open approximately 100 net this year.
