Herman Miller digs into design history with modular sofa posters

ZEELAND, Mich. — Herman Miller is giving a nod to its history of modular furniture design with two posters from its back catalog of advertising prints.

The prints are each taken from a company catalog featuring 44 black-and-white posters created by Herman Miller’s graphic design team. Known as the “The Big Book,” the company’s salespeople used the large print posters to market the pieces to prospective showrooms and retailers.

The Wilkes Modular Sofa Group Poster and the Chadwick Modular Seating Poster, respectively designed by Barbara Loveland and Steve Frykholm as part of “The Big Book” project, showcased the flexibility of modular seating to potential buyers. The company will mark the the 50th anniversary of its Chadwick Modular Seating line this year.

The company will release the posters as part of a series of five new archival prints on Feb. 27. The collection of posters incorporates designs spanning the years 1960-1981 and is set to be sold online in the U.S. and Canada through Herman Miller.
