Lozi designs modular plywood furniture to make the most of compact bedrooms
During this year's London Design Festival, plywood furniture specialist Lozi will debut a modular system, including clean-lined wardrobes and a fold-down bed, that aims to offer an affordable alternative to bespoke cabinetry.
The idea for the collection emerged towards the end of the Covid-19 pandemic, when Lozi founder Soroush Pourhashemi received several requests from clients who needed their bedroom to also function as a workspace.
Bespoke solutions developed for this purpose can become prohibitively expensive, as they involve a great deal of costly and time-consuming design work and long manufacturing lead times.
Using his 14 years of experience creating custom-made furniture, Pourhashemi developed a series of pieces that can be used together to fully furnish a bedroom while offering the ease, convenience and lower cost of standalone furniture.
Pourhashemi told Dezeen that the solution allows users to "mix and match individual standalone units to create a freestanding piece that mimics fitted joinery, like how Ikea sells their iconic Billy Bookcase design."
The collection comprises three wardrobe designs, a fold-down Murphy bed, a desk unit, a chest of drawers and a freestanding bed frame, with optional bedside tables and a headboard.
Each piece can be easily adapted and combined with others to create a range of configurations without the need for bespoke design work.
"One of the biggest issues with small bedrooms is efficiently using the limited space," claimed Pourhashemi, pointing out that the units are available in a range of sizes starting at just 40 centimetres wide.
"Small bedrooms can also end up feeling very busy, so we kept all the designs very clean, with shelving and storage hidden behind beautifully finished doors rather than using open shelving."
The wardrobes include a unit with double doors, another with a single door and curved end sections that can be combined in various ways to fit any space.
The fold-down bed can also be used alongside the wardrobes to create a cohesive storage wall, with the bed disappearing when not in use.
Desk units can be used on their own or can slot in next to the wardrobes and bed, while the chest of drawers features a built-in vanity.
The standalone furniture was designed to complement the fitted units and includes an updated version of Lozi's best-selling curved bed frame, with a large storage drawer incorporated in the base.
The furniture is made at Lozi's Hackney Road workshop, using a custom-built modular jig system that enables all of the curved components to be fabricated using the same efficient process.
The brand's signature curved forms feature throughout the collection, adding style and personality to the pieces while reducing the risk of bumping into sharp edges when moving around a small space.
Pourhashemi founded Lozi in 2012 with the aim of creating furniture that is minimal and modern while displaying a distinct sense of personality.
The studio combines digital manufacturing and traditional woodworking methods to craft furniture that is mostly made to order, with the flexibility to adapt to custom measurements as well as offering a wide range of paint colours and veneer options.
The bedroom furniture collection is being launched in a range of four classic finishes – maple, oak, cherry and walnut – that showcase the wood's natural beauty and tactility.
