Promotion: from 4 to 10 May, Munich Creative Business Week is set to host its 15th annual festival around the city of Munich, which will feature exhibits, events and an all-day Design Summit.

Supported by local organisations Bayern Design, the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy and the City of Munich, Munich Creative Business Week (MCBW) brings together design professionals from around the world for a week of networking and learning.

This year's theme is entitled Playground of Possibilities, and is built around four guiding principles that help shape the event's diverse programming.

"What the world needs is not perfection but the joy of creating," said MCBW. "Openness. The courage to begin. Creativity not as an accessory, but as a tool for change."

"With this year's motto 'Playground of Possibilities,' Munich once again becomes a hub for design, innovation, and future ideas."

The summit's guiding principles are Empowering the Creative Self, Exploring the Creative Field, Turning Ideas into Action, and Creating Visions that enrich.

Together, they explore emerging design technologies such as AI, playfulness and curiosity, experimentation, and ultimately using design to create impact.

"Design becomes a tool for empathy, responsibility, and bold ideas," said the team. "It is about creating impact and feeling that action matters – and that this very feeling fuels the joy of design."

The week's highlight is the full-day Design Summit on 4 May at the Munich Urban Colab, which will include keynotes, talks, and panels that encourage questions and active participation.

Some of the keynote speakers will be London-based design critic Alice Rawsthorn, food designer Marije Vogelzang, design theory professor Friedrich von Borries and curator and artist Hideaki Ogawa.

Other events around the city include master classes with designers such as Mirko Borsche and Steffi Bauer, and exhibitions, such as a public installation by architecture collective Studio Carraldo.

Social events like coffee hours and coworking are also offered as part of the week-long programming.

This year's theme is entitled Playground of Possibilities

"The playground is a place we all know – open, imperfect, full of motion and emotion," said the team. "It's where we try, test, fail, build, laugh, and return to."

"That makes it the perfect metaphor for design today: less about control, more about momentum."

Munich recently hosted the IAA Mobility motor show, while 3XN completed a sports arena wrapped in aluminium ribs in the city.

Previous MCBW summits, such as the 2022 and 2021 editions in the wake of the Coronavirus, focused on using design as a tool to create a better future.
