DesignSingapore Council will launch the Singapore Design Biennale in 2027, which will succeed the long-running Singapore Design Week event.

Set to take place next year from May 14 to June 20, the event, which will take place every two years, was described as "a new chapter for Singapore in the international design calendar".

The biennale is set to replace the annual Singapore Design Week event, which has run for 10 editions since 2014.

"Natural next evolution of our design journey"

"The launch of the Singapore Design Biennale marks a natural next evolution of our design journey," DesignSingapore Council director Dawn Lim told Dezeen.

"Over the past 10 editions, Singapore Design Week has built a strong foundation and fostered meaningful relationships across both local and international communities."

"Transitioning to a biennial format gives us the time and space to go further – developing more ambitious ideas, enabling deeper collaborations, and presenting work that is more experimental, impactful, and globally resonant," she continued.

The expanded Singapore Design Biennale will take place over five weeks, rather than the previous event's 11-day run, and is set to be held earlier in the year – moving from September to May/June.

"It reflects our confidence"

The organisers believe that relaunching as a biennale will allow the event to draw more attention to the country's design community.

"This shift is about raising the bar for Singaporean design on the world stage," said Lim.

"It reflects our confidence in the maturity of our design ecosystem, and our commitment to positioning Singapore not just as a participant in global design conversations, but as a place that actively shapes them."

Ahead of next year's inaugural biennial, DesignSingapore Council is launching an open call for participants in June 2026.

The news of the move from an annual to biennial event follows a similar move by Swedish trade show Stockholm Furniture Fair and the associated Stockholm Design Week, which is also relaunching as a biennial event in 2027.
