Traffic cones a-comin’: Road, infrastructure work underway for part of HPMkt showroom district
HIGH POINT — One High Point Market has just wrapped up, but plans are already in motion that will impact the next event in April.
The City of High Point is working on improvements along several streets within the Market Showroom District and just a couple blocks of the Market’s epicenter at the Transportation Terminal.
Improvements that are part of the $9.5 million project will include new sidewalks, curb and gutter, decorative crosswalks, mast arm signal poles, asphalt resurfacing, and a new underground utility duct bank to replace overhead lines. Water, sewer and stormwater utilities also will be replaced. Streets that will be impacted include South Main Street, South Wrenn Street and Russell Avenue, with South Main Street slated to be closed until October 2026 when the project is expected to be completed.

“These are the dollars we went after with the (N.C.) legislature a couple years ago to bury power lines in that area,” High Point Market Authority President and CEO Tammy Covington told sister publication Furniture Today. She added that the HPMA is very excited about what is being done in the south area of the Showroom District and that it will make the area more attractive and safe to pedestrians and marketgoers.
To accommodate the April market traffic, South Main Street will be temporarily reopened April 11 to May 5, 2026, and all shuttle routes will be able to operate as usual.
“We’ve been meeting with the showrooms that are being effected and have made sure they had the timelines for the project,” said Covington, noting that the HPMA has been and will continue to be involved with the contractor as the work goes forward. “We see our role to communicate with everyone.”
Exhibitors and showroom buildings in the affected area include: Asian Loft, Atrium on Main, Elements International, Piedmont Furniture Inds./CTC Furniture, Riverside and Whalen Furniture.
