The Urban Electric Co., a South Carolina-based lighting maker that prides itself on bench-made techniques and timeless craftsmanship, will be part of the new Charleston Design District when it opens this fall. Established by Navy Yard Charleston and located along the Cooper River in North Charleston, the campus will serve as a regional design hub for designers to create and source premium home furnishings for a wide range of product lines. Kravet, Schumacher and Textures have already signed leases, and the Urban Electric Co. is one of several Charleston-based brands joining the collective design guild.
The Urban Electric Co. is a bit of a fixture in the Charleston community. In a city known for its food scene, you can find the company’s lighting in restaurants like The Ordinary, Melfi’s and The Dewberry, the company notes on its website.

Houzz‘ recent 2025 Kitchen Trends Study delves into what consumers are willing to sacrifice for the sake of a larger kitchen (namely, square footage taken from the dining room and/or living room).
Lighting’s part in the renovation project means upgraded fixtures. After recessed (73%) and undercabinet (71%) lights, pendants are the next most popular option, chosen by 57% of those who upgraded lighting as part of their project. Less sought after were chandeliers, added by 19%; wall lights, 8%; and a fixture with a fan, 7%. A metal-glass combination was chosen by more than half of homeowners.
At 65%, pendants were the No. 1 choice for over-the-island lighting, outpacing recessed lights (30%), chandeliers (9%) and flush-mount lights (6%). It was a tight race between the number of pendants used to light in-kitchen islands, with two lights (36%) barely topping three lights (35%).

Speaking of kitchen lighting, Cheryl Fenelle Dixon, chief marketing officer at German cabinet manufacturer nobilia North America, noted one lighting trend from the recent Kitchen & Bath Industry Show: “Lighting will be a key feature in 2025 kitchens, with a focus on creating the right ambiance while also improving functionality,” Dixon said in a release. “This includes task lighting over prep areas, accent lighting to highlight design elements, and ambient lighting for overall atmosphere.”
