five intersecting cylinders shape fran silvestre arquitectos’ house in madrid
five cylindrical volumes organize home in madrid
Fran Silvestre Arquitectos has completed a residence in Las Rozas, Madrid, where five intersecting cylindrical volumes establish both the architectural language and the home’s spatial organization. Positioned on a gently sloping site overlooking the Sierra de Guadarrama, the 370-square-meter project uses a clear geometric strategy to separate domestic functions while maintaining a cohesive architectural identity. Each cylinder accommodates a distinct part of the program, creating a composition in which circulation, structure, and living spaces emerge from the same formal system.
Rather than treating the circular forms as isolated objects, the architects connect them through a series of orthogonal junctions that generate fluid transitions between rooms. The arrangement also creates a compact central courtyard that acts as the project’s spatial anchor, bringing daylight deep into the house while establishing visual connections between the different volumes and the surrounding landscape.

The site’s natural topography plays a defining role in the project’s form. Oblique cuts at the base of each cylinder allow the volumes to adapt to the changing terrain with minimal intervention, while similarly angled roof profiles reinterpret the pitched roofs characteristic of the area’s residential architecture. These precise geometric interventions also introduce skylights and carefully positioned openings that capture changing daylight throughout the day.
Large glazed openings by the Valencia-based team at Fran Silvestre Arquitectos extend the interiors toward gardens, terraces, and distant mountain views, allowing each volume to establish its own relationship with the landscape. Together with the internal courtyard, these outdoor spaces create a sequence of sheltered and open environments that balance privacy with expansive views across the site.

architects reference sculptural art through circular forms
Although the project is defined by a rigorous geometric language, its composition also draws from artistic references. The architects cite Spanish sculptor Andreu Alfaro’s ‘Homage to Brâncuși’ as an early influence, translating the artwork’s repetition of simple forms into an architectural system based on proportion, rhythm, and variation. The result is a residence where identical geometries generate diverse spatial experiences.
Throughout the house, minimalist detailing reinforces the clarity of the overall composition, allowing geometry, light, and landscape to take center stage. Circular volumes, orthogonal intersections, and carefully framed views work together to create a home that is both sculptural and highly functional, demonstrating the studio’s continued exploration of architecture through precise forms and restrained material expression.
