Sales growth for the area rug category inched up this year, growing by a 1.2%, according to Home Accents Today‘s recently published 2025 Universe Report. Sales in 2025 are an estimated $6.95 billion, compared to an estimated $6.85 billion last year, according to the annual state of the industry survey.

Sales grew modestly in a few channels of distribution — discount department stores/off-price retailers notched 2.4% growth, while home improvement centers/warehouse clubs reported a roughly 1.2% increase in sales. But craft/fabric stores have taken a 10% hit along with “other” channels, where sales declined 3.1%, and traditional furniture stores (-0.2%).

The area rug category, which accounts for 8% of the home accents business, fared much the same as other product categories in a challenging year. Total home accents sales across seven categories are expected to rise to an estimated $86.1 billion this year, up 1.2% over 2024’s $85.06 billion mark, according to the 2025 Universe Report. More information about that report can be found here.
